Mannitol, USP Grade and Lyophilization Certified
, is a sugar alcohol (polyol) that is extremely useful for freeze drying proteins and other biomolecules, It is widely used as an excipient in pharmaceutical applications because it allows proteins, peptides and other biomolecules to be preserved without succumbing to chemical and physical degradation over time.
During freeze drying, Mannitol provides an amorphous (non-crystalline) matrix, which allows water to escape from samples, while simultaneously preventing the collapse of the sample. When using this excipient, proteins remain undisrupted during processing and channels form for water sublimation. Mannitol can be used in concentrations up to 10% w/v, though excellent matrices can be formed when used at 5% w/v.
Each lot of Mannitol is lyophilization certified. It has been tested on cell lysate preparations, demonstrating a 95% recovery of lactate dehydrogenase enzyme activity.
